Went xcountry skiing about an hour west of here (4th of July Road). It was fantastic. And fantastically hard. Gps data says it was 1200 elevation gain in about 3 1/2 miles of trail (each way).

It was about 40 degrees according to the Jeep, and nice and sunny when I started. Good? Great, for a while...

Not so bad for the first 2/3rds of it, but after that I was bustin' crust, cutting my own trail. To make matters worse, the sun was out, it was warmish, so every step I was making on the snow was causing it to melt and refreeze to the bottom of my skis. From gliding along pretty effortlessly to cutting through soft snow banks nearly to my knees, with what seemed to be an added weight of 20 pounds on each foot. Okay, it couldn't have been that much, but it sure seemed like it...

I turned around right as a snow squall was hiting pretty good, and the temperature dropped pretty significantly, and pretty fast. The descent was great, for a while: but not much scares me like descending on xcountry skis on ice. I fell a bunch, but I'd still do it again.
