i took the long way over to snow mountain ranch for that cx race on sunday morning (up Poudre canyon over cameron, then a gravel cut-off to Rand, over willow mtn pass to Granby) and was just freaking on the aspens all the way. from a distance it looked like entire hillsides were on fire. and i didn't have my camera ... NUTS!!
Ended up 5th in the 3's (~25 starters) so I'll take it. Had a crappy start (14th or so to the 1st barrier) but rode comfortably throughout to find the front of the race eventually. Closed on 4th place the last lap and sprinted him ... but couldn't quite get around. The top 3 were about 15-20 seconds ahead.
I haven't done a 'cross or road race in over 3 years, and just a handful of mtn bike races each year (fewer than 5) so it's pretty fun to be stepping back into it. First 3's race in a long long time ... I gave 'em the "I work too much. I'm old. I'm fat." sob story and they let me downgrade from the 2's. Its fun to be "in" the race as opposed to being at the back ya know.
Funniest moment, and I can't believe it: I was buying my ACA license from Beth Wrenn Estes (used to be the Colorado USCF rep. and has put on/organized the Mt. Evans hillclimb since before the dawn of time). She saw my name and listened to my downgrade sob story. And she looks at me goes "I've seen you before. You look familiar. How long have you lived in Colorado?". I told 3 years plus but that I haven't been racing in ACA events, but that back in the day I used to come out for Evans from Nebraska. She goes "you weren't one of those kooks we'd get from Lincoln every year were you?".
Well yes, as a matter of fact I was .....
Next weekend: Gunny Cross down in Gunnison. Two days - Twilight race saturday evening; Mid-day race on Sunday. I lvoe fall. Oh Purdy Good.
Dave....i thought it was only gonna take one cross race to remind you of the pain ? Me think you enjoyed yourself...hell, you've already got the entire winter already planned out for more ! nice
