nebraska for the holiday week(end)

Yo all,

As long as the weather holds, the family and I will be back in Omaha Wed-Sun of the coming week. I'll have my cross bike only since my mtb shifter thumb is out of commission, and we'd love to see some people while we're back. What's going on? Anybody getting together for a ride or some hanging out?

Olympia

We headed back to Washington for Thanksgiving. Used to be, the inlaws had an extra car and I had more free time (no kid), so I'd rent a bike, drive the car out to Capital Forest (super fun) and disappear for an afternoon or two,

Now, the transportation is gone, time is short, but I still need to get away. So, after a very brief deliberation, I shipped the $100 Gt road bike to the inlaws. Tada! Insta-ride from the doorstep. I spent a couple days putting together a nice 20+ mile route, in the rain and 45 degree weather.

It's pretty spectacular road riding. The main road has a 6ft shoulder most of the way, and the neighborhood routes have next to no traffic. Lots of views of the sound between the trees. The side roads and shoulders have a couple interesting factors: wet ground up leaves and moss growing right on the asphalt.

The rest of these are from Steamboat Island, at the end of the road.

happy tday boys and girls

thanksgiving ride with Skrekie......opting to miss out on breakfast in order to gorge out on a dinner table full of goodies. I had some inner grumblings going on halfway through the ride. But man o man......i was thankful for a plate of turkey afterwards. Oh....also thankful for the strong legged Henery's 57 yarder !! Go skers.

Interesting Quote.

The family and I are spending turkey day in L.A. This year.I was online looking for a shop to visit while we are out there and I came accross www.atomiccycles.com . I will probably go check it out. I need a couple parts for a couple stingrays that I am trying to get up and running. Looks like they might have the parts here. If you don't want to go to their web site they have this quote from a pissed off precher that must have crashed his bike on the way to church. I think its purdy good.

"These bladder wheeled bicycles are diabolical devices of the Demon of Darkness. They are contrivances to trap the feet of the unwary and skin the nose of the innocent. They are full of guile and deciept! When you think you have broken one to ride and subdued its wild and Satanic nature, behold it bucketh you off in the road and teareth a great hole in your pants. Look not upon the bike when it bloweth upon its wheels, for at last it bucketh like a bronco and hurteth like thunder. Who has skinned legs? Who has a bloody nose? Who has the ripped breeches? They that daly along with the bicycle!  from a sermon, Maryland, 1896.As quoted from: A social History of the Bicycle, Robert A. Smith

Hey if anybody knows of a cool shop in the valley to check out let me know. I will have a loaner bike and a little time to check out a shop or two.

VooDoo Agwe (The Spirit of Adventure)

Seeing that I posted the 324. I figured that I should share some pics of another bike that I have had for a few months now. I saw this bike in vegas in the ought 7. I only snapped a few pics while there and this bike was one of them. So I have been waiting for it to become available for a while. I bought it to leave at work for riding around town to get coffee, grab lunch, hit a little bit of singletrack. VooDoo calls it a 28er but it comes stock with 29 x 2.1 WTB Vulpines with a little room to spare. Its an up right position but for the hour long ride (at the longest) that I will be riding on this bike its fine. What eles its got a 38:16 gearing. I was bummed to find the hub didn't have the step down threading for a lock ring. The stem bar mount is also a little to wide to get a midge or dirtdrop in there. I would change the bar/stem if I was going to ride any trails that are rockier than what I have been riding. Its a purdy fun bike that sells for around $750.

AMF Aerobee Avenger 324

Melissa bought this for me for $30 bucks. Its in purdy good shape. There is a Missoula license on it from 1974. The bike has 24" wheels and a sweet 3 speed shifter. I guess its a schwinn manta ray copy. I have the bike mostly cleaned up and bearings repacked. I'll take a few more pics when I take it out for a ride.

Another Fall Mancation

Getting around is a lot easier when there's a custom Tomac bike hauler at our beck and call. Many thanks for that.

Cutting the ribbon on Saturday's long ride. Climbing Petakis in GJ. We went up to the very tip top, and I left my camera in my bag pretty much the whole day.

18 Road goodness. Camped there, so rode it a lot. Always fun.

endurance but not bikey

Thought I'd give a Lampin' shout out to Mary, who just finished her first ever marathon today. woohoo! She's done several halfs, but this was her first shot at the real deal. Denver Marathon. Oh, in case you guys didn't know, marathon is even less spectator friendly than endurance mountainbiking :)

finish time!

new trail in town

Finally. Last Monday we finally opened the Picture Rock Trail. The trail leaves from town in Lyons and heads to the south to access the Heil Ranch trail system. It's good. This particular trail is a long uphill 5.5 mile tight and technical gem. With this and Hall Ranch right here, you can bet I won't be driving much to ride anymore.

5 days to roam

skipped vegas and instead offered Tracy 5 romantic days in the Skamper and about a 100 miles of trail. Just what a woman wants...right ?

Clark Fork rivertrail, this trail really reminded me of the Platte River trail sytem.....beautiful, rolling, river bluff country.

10 years

I knew it was getting close, so I checked out the title last week. On Sept. 22, 1998, I bought my Jeep with 10,008 miles. A few adventures later, with 135,000+ on the clock we're still going strong.

speaking of NE, anyone want to ride?

I'm going to be back in Lincoln next weekend (9/20, 9/21) for Micah's wedding. Anyone want to ride? I'll probably hit Wilderness on Sat around brunchtime and I'm down for whatever on Sunday. Anyone not doing the PCL race on Sat want to hit up the park?

Bombs and Bacon @ Exit 426

A three day weekend isn't enough time for all the fun I wanted to have back in the homeland. I did manage to get to Platte for the last bacon ride of the season. Rick was kind enough to show me around Platte since I'd get lost out there on my own. Met up with the nice sized crew from Lincoln, lots of folks I havn't seen in years.

Dawn at the gate.

Tight, twisty, tacky.

Sac museum was pretty amazing. Speed + camera = SR-71.
